Never too many words about a guy named Slade...

Lance - curious if you think / teams really put weight into the signal that "smart" orgs are inquiring about their player...ie, did the Rays' reaching out on Cecconi actually materially increase his value in the eyes of the Dbacks?

I don't think the vast majority of teams actually increase the value of a player because the Dodgers or something reach out. I do put value in it from a public analyst perspective, however. Particularly on guys I wasn't "on" before, like Cecconi.

Sometimes you look at a guy and go "oh, yeah, that makes sense, he's throwing an 88-mph sweeper that's underutilized." But with Cecconi, the only defining feature is a) big total movement fastball and b) some command. So with a guy like him, it's a good thought exercise.

I'll go so far as to say that if you're an analyst in an organization and you dislike a player, and LAD/TB/MIL or somebody else comes knocking about said player, you should at least have a theory as to why they might want to target said player and a counter to why that adjustment won't work from your POV. That's how I would operate at least.

Ie, there's a high-velo guy with above-average stuff that you don't like cause you think his mechanics suck or he'll never be able to command the ball. MIN asks about said player (one of the first Kinatrax orgs, sharp on the delivery side of things). You should communicate with your team biomech guy as to what MIN might look at adjusting, whether you've tried that as an org, why it may not have worked, etc.

Long answer, but hopefully helpful. Just dumping my thoughts on this process.

The Ceconni Corollary holds that a long answer must follow a long post.

Super insightful, thank you. Part of the fun of baseball - every player is a challenge trade waiting to happen and you have to not only know what you do well but know how that differentiates your org from others.

If you ran a pitching dev group, would you focus your efforts on improving stuff or improving command?

Hey question, i don’t know where else to contact you but i was wondering if you can give me some thoughts on braden nett stuff and how it grades in your model? I know his command is awful but just wondering about the raw stuff. Thanks

Yeah, he grades out really well, it's just reliever command right now. He's throwing 6 pitches, not really zoning any of them well, death by numbers.

I have his 4S, SL, SWP, CU all between 100-110 and then his sinker and splitter below average. The split is a little slow (83 mph), but I think it's better than a 95. The sinker shape is w/e but he's mostly 4S anyways.
